Hi Peter,
You may not remember me. My name is Moriah. You helped me to get a job at Best International School in Zhengzhou. I will forever be grateful to you. Because of your help in finding me this placement, I was able to meet my husband. We now have a child.
Unfortunately I no longer live in China. We have come back to Australia and are now living in Hobart. We have plans to return to China in the future. Our plans are successful, I will be sure to contact you again to help us find a placement that suits our family.
Once again, thank you so much.
Moriah.
Hi Peter- yes, I have great internet connection and skype often with family and friends.
I didn’t encounter the culture shock I had prepared myself for - but life is different in every way - I tell my friends its like being plucked out of my zone and into an alien zone, but its all good. I love the food and the people are so kind and lovely. My apartment is in a huge complex and have been living here over four months - never have I heard an argument, a child screaming or anything other than talking, laughing, singing and all nice things - it is certainly different from my previous life that’s for sure. I love the shopping, the weather has been perfect, albeit drought conditions, and I do long for the ocean!!! Winter will be harsh and the real test into my perseverance, if I can do the winter, I will be home and hosed. Yes, I do think hanging in and completing the contract is the right thing to do too, plus like we said good for the reference. They love me, the students and my colleagues, they think I am great - which is very good for me, especially being a novice teacher. Being a mother helps lots too.
I am onto my fourth elective, and intend to do one more to attain my Diploma by year end, so my qualifications will also bring better salary in the future.
Thanks again Peter.
Cheers
Patci
Dear Peter,
Good to hear from you and you were right, the primary stages of living here were sometimes a little crazy. Though now the dust has settled much for me.
In saying this China has helped me to have a great insight about myself and my current life. I will be leaving Gao Ba in January, not because of anything negative rather on the contrary, my future has become very important to me. I will return to Australia to recommence my university studies. I hope to return to China after my studies.
The school - Lu Hua Zhong Xue, is a great school for beginner teachers to learn to become a teacher. No media accessibility, no colour printers, no computers for the students, etc. This is a good thing to those whom are wanting to teach English honestly. I am truly grateful for the experience I have had here, my connections to the Chinese company that is my employer here are still good and not damaged in anyway. They understand my decision and I will keep in touch with them because even they have been great teachers to me (consciously or unconsciously, it doesn't matter).
In mid to late January I will return to Australia, though I will strongly miss the people (teachers, students, friends made, civilians) and life I have had in Gao Ba, my future is calling to me.
In the event that I return to China, it will probably be to a similar area of China but I hope to teach INTERMEDIATE level students there. Only because my creativity can be given more expression with this audience and as a teacher to assist with the students' learning of English more satisfyingly effective to theirs and the schools' expectations.
I will keep in touch
Murray.
Hi Peter,
I don't know how well you remember me. You helped me find a teaching position in Suzhou China after I finished my TESOL Course in Adelaide back in 2007.
I spend only 6 months in China before I returned home due to my Dad being ill. He is all fine now, but was difficult for my family at the time.
I'm now in Brisbane with my boyfriend I'm doing admin work and study when I can at the Natural Medicine College in Stones Corner, which prompted me to contact you after I read in your email that you do talks around Brisbane. It was strange when I returned home because my friends and family didn't really relate to my experiences in China.
It was just like all the testimonials I read about. It was a very frustrating, exciting and interesting experience. The Chinese are the most unique people and a lot of the western teachers are not your run-of-the-mill people either. I had days when my classes went like clock-work and other days were a total bomb - I couldn't teach to save myself (they were usually the classes I put so much research into..LOL).
Anyway, I just wanted to touch base with you and I'm interested to keep up-to-date with how you’re going.
Hope this finds you well.
Regards
Louise
